How to Connect a Wireless Microphone to a Sound System | Featuring the Pure Resonance Audio WMS1-HH Wireless Microphone System

Knowing how to connect a wireless microphone to a sound system is key to delivering clear, reliable audio for presentations, events, or performances. When your audio system is set up properly, your voice carries consistently and clearly throughout the space. In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step of the connection process, helping you hook up your equipment with confidence and minimize the risk of technical issues.

Essential Components

This guide uses the Pure Resonance Audio WMS1-HH wireless microphone system to demonstrate the connection process. The WMS1-HH comes complete with a wireless microphone transmitter, receiver, and all the necessary cables for setup. In most cases, you will need the following components to get started:

  • Speakers

  • Mixer Amplifier (or a combination of a separate power amplifier and mixer)

  • Wireless Microphone System (including a transmitter and receiver)

  • An XLR cable (or other compatible patch cable)

  • Speaker wire

How to Connect a Wireless Microphone

1. Getting Your Audio System Started
Start by connecting your chosen speakers to the mixer amplifier (or power amplifier) using speaker wire. This forms the foundation of your sound system and ensures your audio will be projected clearly throughout the space.

If you have a separate mixer and amplifier, you will need to connect them together using the appropriate cables. This allows the mixer to send the audio signal to the amplifier, which then powers the speakers.

2. Connect the Receiver to the Mixer or Mixer Amplifier
A wireless microphone receiver always has an audio output that sends the microphone’s signal into your sound system. In most cases, including with the WMS1-HH, this output uses an XLR connection.

To complete the connection-

  • Plug the female end of an XLR cable into the output on the wireless microphone receiver.

  • Plug the male end of the XLR cable into the mic input of your mixer/mixer amplifier. (This is assuming that your mic input is XLR compatible.)

This setup allows the audio from your wireless microphone transmitter to travel wirelessly to the receiver and then through the cable into the mixer and amplifier. Once the signal reaches the amplifier, it is boosted and sent out through your speakers.

3. Amplify and Project the Sound
With everything connected, your microphone’s signal will flow seamlessly out to your speakers. If you don’t hear any sound, check that all cables are firmly connected, devices are powered on, and inputs and outputs are correctly matched.

Cable and Input Variations

Audio equipment can vary significantly, so it’s important to recognize the types of inputs and outputs on your devices. While some systems use bare wire connections, others may utilize ¼”, XLR, RCA, or a combination of these. Choosing the right cables for your setup is essential to ensure proper signal transmission and overall compatibility.
